UPDATING: Flood warnings and closures

LOCATIONS throughout the Derwent Valley are experiencing flooding today. Click through for the latest updates on Road Closures, Council Closures, Education Facilities Closed, Electricity Interruptions and Weather Warnings.

ROAD CLOSURES in the Derwent Valley:  Due to the extreme weather conditions all motorists are advised to take extreme caution on all roads. There are numerous instances of excess water on the roads as well apart from the listed road closures. Click here for road closure updates.
  • Glen Dhu Rd, Molesworth, is closed at Molesworth Rd due to a bridge being washed away
  • Gordon River Rd, Bushy Park, closed between St Augustine's Church and the Bushy Park Showground
  • Lachlan Rd closed at the intersection with Hydehurst Rd


COUNCIL CLOSURES in the Derwent Valley: Check the Derwent Valley Council Facebook page for updates.
  • Peppermint Hill waste disposal site is closed today.
  • Tynwald Park is closed and the council urges the public to stay away from the area until flooding subsides.
  • Molesworth: Bridges on Molesworth Rd, Collins Cap Rd and Glen Dhu Rd are closed.
  • Lachlan: Bridges over the Lachlan River at Hydehurst Rd and Hansons Rd are closed.

ELECTRICITY INTERRUPTIONS in the Derwent Valley: Click here for updates.
  • 192 properties at Glenfern, Hayes, Moogara, Mt Lloyd, New Norfolk, Plenty and Ubridge: Long delays expected before restoration.
  • 64 properties at Molesworth. Restoration expected by 8pm tonight.


WEATHER WARNINGS for the Derwent Valley. Click through for full details.
  • Minor flood warning for the Derwent River: Minor flooding is occurring in the Styx River and minor flooding is likely to develop in the Derwent River around New Norfolk overnight Friday into Saturday. Lachlan Creek and Sorell Creek are also much higher than usual. Since 9 am Thursday rainfall totals of up to 130 mm have been recorded in the lower Derwent River catchment.   • Road Weather Alert: Reduced visibility in heavy rain and water over roads will make road conditions dangerous Thursday night and on Friday. Check Tasmania Police for road closures.
  • Flood Watch: Strong river rises and localised flooding has been observed across many catchments, and further rises are expected during Friday and into the weekend. Flooding may develop during Friday, with the severity depending on the rainfall totals. Rain is expected to ease from this afternoon.
  • Warning to Sheep Graziers: Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and strong southerly winds are expected to persist today.
  • Marine Wind Warning: Strong wind warning for the Derwent Estuary today.


EMERGENCY ADVICE if you are in the affected areas:

  • Beware of fallen trees.
  • Do not drive, walk, play, ride or swim through flood waters
  • Do not go near storm drains and pipes, causeways and waterways, ravines and rivers
  • Keep your phone charged in case of power outages
  • Move livestock to higher ground
  • Ensure your pets are safe.
