New councillor known this week

THE identity of the Derwent Valley's newest member of council is expected to be known this Tuesday when the Tasmanian Electoral Commission conducts a recount to fill the vacancy caused by the recent resignation of councillor Damian Bester.

The TEC will recount the votes that elected Mr Bester in 2014  to determine who will be elected in his place. All unsuccessful candidates from that election have been invited to nominate for the recount if they remain eligible.

The successful candidate will serve until the council elections later this year. Mr Bester resigned as a councillor on February 28 due to changes in his employment at the Mercury. Mayor Martyn Evans said Mr Bester had made a significant contribution to the community as a councillor since he was first elected in 2009.

"Damian has exhibited a remarkable commitment to the Derwent Valley, particularly in the area of heritage, its management and conservation," Cr Evans said. "My council team will certainly miss Damian’s focus on the fine detail of issues, his ability to hold tenaciously to a proposal until it had been fully considered from every angle, and his passion for the history of the Derwent Valley and its preservation," he said.

Since the statewide council elections of 2014, the TEC has conducted 21 recounts and eight by-elections to fill vacancies on 19 councils.
