Severe Thunderstorm Warning


For people in the East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East and North West Coast Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:24 pm Friday, 24 November 2017.

A broad trough of low pressure is passing over Tasmania today. Combined with warm temperatures and high humidity the trough is providing favourable conditions for thunderstorm development this afternoon and evening.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Oatlands, Swansea, Bicheno, Orford, Fingal and Bothwell.

21.6mm was reported in 1 hour at Lake Gairdner Dam.

1-1.5cm hail was reported in Campbell Town around 4:00pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 
* Move your car under cover. 
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters. 
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. 
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. 
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. 
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500. 

The next warning is due to be issued by 7:25 pm.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at or call 1300 659 216. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
