Blackest day recalled

The front page of this
week's Gazette.
THE Black Tuesday bushfires of 1967 are the topic of a special issue of the Derwent Valley Gazette this week.

Three local residents were among the 64 people who lost their lives in Tasmania's worst natural disaster, 50 years ago this week. Houses were razed in many Derwent Valley towns and New Norfolk narrowly escaped widespread devastation.

The Gazette also reports that a statement by former New Norfolk fire chief Barry Lathey has been featured on the packaging for a medallion commemorating the Black Tuesday 50th anniversary.

The Gazette is available all week. Grab a copy at your local shop - it's the paper with Barry on the front.
