THE second round of competition in the Southern Cricket Association got under way in mostly cold and windy conditions on Saturday, improving somewhat on the Sunday which made the playing conditions much more enjoyable.

In first grade, New Norfolk I went down to Claremont at Tynwald Park by 54 runs. Claremont made 10/142 off 46.2 overs and in reply the Red Caps were bowled out for just 88 off 33.3 overs. Captain Jason Rigby top-scored with 23 (three fours), Seb Wishart made 13 (one four) and Cody Neads 12. With the ball for the home side, Joe McCulloch showed he will again worry plenty of batsmen, taking 3-23 off his 10 overs including four maidens. Jason Rigby took 3-36 (7.2) and Josh Dykes was very tight taking 2-13 off his 10 overs. Stewart Rice took 1-22 (9).

In second grade, Gretna I made it two wins in a row by defeating Richmond/Cambridge by 124 runs at Richmond. Rhys Browning got into early form putting together a well-made 74 with five well-struck fours. Browning put on a 117-run partnership with Zac Crosswell who batted very well making 35 with two fours. Todd Jarvis made 27 including two fours and Peter Jelkic 23 with two sixes. Gretna was all out for 10/235 off 49.4 overs. In reply Richmond/Cambridge was no match for the visitors and the side was bowled out for 111 off 28.5 overs. Corey Ransley found his rhythm in a great spell of bowling taking 4/17 off his 10 overs. Aaron Maddox took 3-31 (10) did well as did Craig Cunningham 2-40 (4) and Peter Jelkic 1-5 (.4).

In the other second grade match, Molesworth I got across the line by two wickets over Old Beach at Boyer Oval. The visitors had first knock and were dismissed for 109 off 33.2 overs. This was thanks to some great bowling by Molesworth. Brad Coppleman's excellent spell of bowling of 3-6 off 8.2 overs was a standout. Brayden Hodge also shone with 3-24 (7). Openers Jeremy Nichols 2-22 (9) and Daniel Coppleman 2-20 (8) also played their role. In reply Molesworth just got home, finishing 8/110 off 33.5 overs. Opener Brayden Hodge top-scored with 30 (one four). Captain Nick Piuselli 25 and other opener Josh Ransley 15 (two fours) were the other main run scorers.

In the fourth grade matches, Bothwell I travelled to Risdon Vale where it had a big 114 -run win over Hobart. Brad Eyles 61 and Craig Pursell 34 put in solid performances for the Bucks who finished 10/203 off 47 overs. Brock Nichols held his end up with 24. In reply, Hobart was skittled for just 89. This was thanks to great bowling by Mathew Glover 4-18 off 7 overs and Craig Pursell 4-28 off 8 overs. Opening bowler Nathan White showed great support collecting 2-13 off 8.1.

In a low-scoring match at Gretna, Gretna II took the chocolates over Bushy Park by just two wickets. Batting first, Bushy had first hit and was dismissed for just 78 off 24 overs. Gretna bowler and youngster Jake Campbell bowled superbly, taking 4-6 off 4 overs. Luke Crosswell also cashed in taking 3-35 off 8 overs. Jackson Ackerly 2-18 (7). Openers Trent Grant 29 and Shaun Fenton 23 were the run-getters for the visitors. In reply Gretna reached the target, but not without a scare, finishing 8/84 off 22 overs. Mathew Burns made 17, Luke Wheeler 13 (one four), and Jake Campbell 12 not out including a six to win the match. Bushy Park bowler Terrance Pritchard who bowled superbly and had Gretna on the ropes took 5-27 off 10 overs. Dylan Grant finished with 3-38 to be the other wicket taker.

Playing at Cornelian Bay, New Norfolk II defeated Derwent by six wickets. Derwent won the toss and had first hit, making just 88 off 32.3 overs. All the Red Caps bowlers played their part. Todd Rusher bowled just 1.3 overs capturing 3 for 2. Josh Walsh did well taking 3-21 off 9 overs. Liam O'Brien 2-12 off 7 was tight while Aaron Drew took 1-23 (6). In reply New Norfolk chased down the small total, finishing 4/91 off 14.1 overs. Keeper Leigh Berry top-scored with 35, hitting six fours. Jamie Hill was next best with 20 (one four).

On Sunday in sixth grade, Molesworth II went down to the more polished Dynnyrne by eight wickets at Wentworth Park. Molesworth had first dig, making 10/116 off 36.4 overs. Young opener Jayden Wilton continues to impress in all facets of the game and made a terrific 51 including four fours and one six. Alan Jablonski made 26 (two fours, two sixes). In reply the home side finished 2/117 off 17.4 overs. Liam Triffitt 1-26 off 4 and Mark Jablonski 1-5 (1.4) were the wicket takers.

In seventh grade, New Norfolk II made it two from two when it defeated the Weily Park Rockers by 114 runs at Weily Park. Batting first, New Norfolk hit up the very good score of 8/229 off its 50 overs. Another youngster showing promise, Jake Bearman, put together a superb 52 hitting eight fours and one six. Coby Kemmler made 41no including five fours. Shayne Upton made 22 (four fours) and Cody Morgan-Coleman 22 (three fours). In reply, the Rockets could only manage 115 before being bowled out in 35.3 overs. Brad Kemmler was the best of the Red Caps bowlers with 4-23 off 7.3 overs. Jake Bearman had a day out taking 3-25 off 6. Coby Kemmler 1-6 (6) and Cody Morgan-Coleman 1-21 (6).

Playing at home in eighth grade, Bothwell II went down to Runnymede by eight wickets. Winning the toss and batting, the Bucks made 10/155 off 39.4 overs. Craig Davey top-scoring with 55. Openers Michael White made 47 and Anthony White 14. In the run chase, the visitors lost just the two wickets finishing 2/156 off 33.2 overs. Captain Peter Hansch was the wicket taker with 2-19 off 7 overs.
