Mayor's China trip was personal

A RECENT visit to China had been a personal trip, Mayor Martyn Evans told last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting in response to a question from Councillor Paul Belcher about the purpose of the international travel.

Cr Evans said his 12-day journey had been partly funded by contacts in China and no ratepayer funds were involved. Despite the personal nature of the trip, Cr Evans said he continued to promote the Derwent Valley as always. He met mayors, politicians, representatives of railways and airlines, promoting the municipality as a great place to visit, live and invest.

"It was a personal trip, funded by me and the Chinese," Cr Evans said in response to a follow-up question about whether the visit was a council activity.

Deputy mayor Ben Shaw congratulated Cr Evans on his initiative in opening up lines of communication with Chinese businesses and officials and Cr James Graham thanked Cr Belcher for asking the question.

  1. Contracts? That would be good to hear about. Having dealt in China for some years they are very astute and would expect something for their investment, this should be open and explained.
