Weather warning latest

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 10:43am on Saturday 4 January 2014.
For areas south of a line from Strahan to Swansea, and for the far northeast coast.

Weather Situation

  • A deep low pressure system to the south of Tasmania will move away to the southeast during the day.
  • Damaging westerly winds averaging 50-60km/h with peak gusts of 110km/h are forecast for the Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts and parts of the North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands and East Coast forecast districts.
  • Damaging winds are expected to ease mid to late afternoon.
  • Drivers are advised that gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.
  • In the last six hours the strongest gusts recorded have been 137km/h on Mt Wellington, 131km/h at Maatsuyker Island, 111km/h at Scotts Peak, and 104km/h in Hobart.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Take care when driving on exposed roads, bridges and causeways.
  • Remain indoors as much as possible.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES on 13 25 00.
The next warning will be issued by 5pm Saturday.
