Shopper points are adding up

MORE than 12,000 frequent shopper points have been donated to the Derwent Valley Community Card now operating at Woolworths supermarket. Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans last night told a councillor workshop that the tally of donated points had reached 12,332 yesterday afternoon.

As reported earlier in the week, the Derwent Valley Community Card is said to be the first of its kind in Australia. The brainchild of New Norfolk resident Ruth Howie, the community card enables any Woolworths shopper to donate unwanted reward points. Customers do not have to be a Frequent Shopper Club cardholder to do so.

Councillor Evans said all checkouts at the New Norfolk Woolworths branch now had the Community Card number programmed into their cash registers, but points could be donated at any Tasmanian Woolworths supermarket by quoting the card number 6194994.

Cr Evans said it was hoped that the program would be extended to other Woolworths-owned businesses including BWS. Accumulated points will be distributed to pensioners in the municipality.
