Severe weather warning updated

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds

for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 9.37pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

Weather Situation:
A cold front approaching Tasmania from the west will cross the state early on Thursday.

Damaging winds around 50km/h with peak gusts of 100km/h are forecast for the East Coast and South East forecast districts and parts of the North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts.

Wind gusts of 89km/h have been observed on Tasman Island in the last two hours, with 87km/h on Mt Wellington and 83km/h on Mt Read.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES on 13 25 00.
Small craft alert for the following areas:
  • Central Plateau Lakes and South West Lakes
The next warning will be issued by 5am Thursday.
