Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds

for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 4:16 pm EST on Wednesday 4 September 2013.

Weather Situation

A cold front approaching Tasmania from the west will cross the state early on Thursday.

Damaging northwesterly winds around 40 to 50km/h with peak gusts of 100km/h are forecast overnight for the East Coast, South East, Central Plateau and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts, and southern parts of the North East and Midlands forecast districts. Damaging winds are expected to contract to the northeast early on Thursday morning then ease.

Drivers are advised that gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES on 13 25 00.
The next warning will be issued by 11pm Wednesday.
